PROJECTS
I VOCATIONAL SERVICE
The basic philosophies of the Rotary club have been:
- " To encourage and foster the ideal of service
as the basic of all worthy enterprises."
- " He profits most who serves best."
- " Service before self."
1.
Rotary Club released 'Career
Guidance Manual' in 1976 , 1985 and the latest
in 2003 which proved popular among schools and Colleges.
2.
Conducted seminars for school and college students on
career Guidance.
3.
Conducted self Development Workshops for children, partnered
with ACT Training Foundation.
4.
'Nambikkai' - a self development Programme
was organized by the club in July 2002, for the girl
Students of Chennai corporation schools.
5.
Other Activities: -

Seminar on Topical issues such as TQM and ISO 9000 by
the Trade and Profession committee
- Seminar on Health Management by the Occupational Health
Committee.
- Free Medical check up for construction workers.
- Training to 300 Head Constables of TamilNadu Police
Service on 'Effective Public Relation Methods' in 2002.
- Seminar on 'Women and Health' was held on women's
Day at SIET college , Chennaiin2003.
- National Seminar on Women Entrepreneurship and Economic
Development in association with Ethiraj college, Chennai.
- Seminar on 'Women in Asia', Issues and concerns in
association with Stella Mary's College.
6. Awards:
- The Employer- employee award instituted in 1961.
- For the Sake of Honour Award instituted in 1963 to
recognize non
- Rotarians who exemplify the principles of Rotary.
- " Young Achievers Award' instituted in 2001 -

- Environment Protection Award institued in 2002 - 03.
- Award for Vocational Excellence in 2003.
II COMMUNITY SERVICE:
-
In 1966, the club donated Rs. 10,000/- to Balavihar,
a school for handicapped children, for the construction
of classrooms.

In 1967, the club donated Rs. 10,000 to the Dattatraya
Orthopaedic Medical centre for construction of an Out
- patient Department.

In 1970, a CSI Hostel was constructed at a cost of Rs.
75,000/- for the CSI School of Deaf and Dumb.

In 1971, the club gifted the Indian Red Cross Society,
Tamilnadu Chapter , Rs.1,25,000/- for the construction
of a dormitory, to house the amputees.

In 1982, the club organised a sports meet for the physically
handicapped at the YMCA campus.
-
In 1996, the club distributed 1500 calipers to the polio
affected persons.
-
The Midday Meal scheme for college students was started
in 1971.
-
In 1973, the Club launched the 'Operation Leprosy Project',
aimed at detecting and curing the leprosy among school
children.

In 1980 the child Trust Hospital started as a small
House and now is grown into a 8 floor, 200 bed hospital
, with the help of grants from Rotary International.

In 2002 - 03 , the club built 22 low cost shelters at
Ennathur Rotarypuram at a cost of Rs. 18 Lacs.
Besides
the above there are many more projects which have been
completed in association with other clubs.

Rotary
club of Madras adopted a slum, way back in 1943 -44,
and continues to
Improve the living standards of the in habitants, in
various ways by:-

Opening a community Hall
- Conducting tailoring classes for women
- Running a health centre with laboratory facilities
.
- Creating job opportunities for the skilled and educated
youth.
- And many more.
The Red Measles Immunisation Programme:
In
the year 1979, Red Measles vaccination doses of 68,000
were donated by RI District 707 from Canada for use
in Madras area in 1980. The Rotary Foundation approved
the 3H grant for the project. The project once started
by the rotary club, was later taken over by Govt. of
India in 1985 and by the Tamilnadu Government in 1987.
POLIO PLUS
The
Rotary International determined to see a polio free
world by 2005, conceived the 'Polio Plus' project in
1984. It was inaugurated on 01st May 1987, in India.
In Tamilnadu, the film stars joined hands with the Rotary
club to popularize the
immunization programme.
THE
3-H POLIO REHABILITATION CENTRE
In
1997, Polio Rehabilation centre was started by the Rotary
Club of Madras with the help of the largest ever grant
made to a single club i.e $ 5,00,000 (Rs. 2 Crores)
from the Rotary Foundation.
BOYS
TOWN:
On
13th October 1988, the Rotary club of Madras Boys Town
Project was inaugurated in a little rented home.
The
Boys town is currently located on 35 acres of prime
agricultural land in Gummidipoondi, Chennai.
The
second 'Boys Town is located on 23 grounds of land in
Selaiyur, Chennai giving a healthy environment to the
economically and socially deprived boys.
PROJECT
THANEER! THANEER! (WATER! WATER!)
This
Project was aimed at desilting and restoring 37 temple
tanks in Madras city. Rain water is collected through
a series of scientifically designed processes on an
average , Rs. 5 Lakh has been spent per tank.

YOUTH SERVICE
The
Rotary club of Madras has
-
Built picnic centre at Flliots Beach (Later taken over
by the Govt.)

Built children home at Royapuram
-
Built home for the mentally challenged children called
"Bala Vihar'
-
Set up a Book Bank
-
Instituted a Youth service Award in 1961.
-
Launched Interact Club that will work with the youth,
instead of merely for youth.-
Besides the interact club, the Rotaract movement
started in 1968, involving the youth between the age
of 17 - 30.
